welcome to the world, my precious first daughter! you came as a surprise—more than a week early!— but i know it's because you wanted to spend this joyous holiday with your mommy and daddy. i must say, you're a lucky little girl, for you've been born to parents who love each other very, very much. and we've already lost our hearts to you.
when i was born, your great-grandmother wrote me a special note. she's a beautiful writer, and i have no better words for you than hers:
when i kiss the top of your little red head and look into your steely-colored eyes, i try to fathom the inscrutable mysteries that you bring with you from beyond. it's a funny world, little evie, full of joys, challenges and adventures—and some sadnesses. i hope your joys outnumber your sadnesses.
and so, brand new evelyn, i wish you happiness, love and a fulfilling life. life is a smorgasbord, a banquet, a challenge; don't miss any of it.
